The Harvest

Being a “Tramp”, a journeyman power lineman that travels from place to place to make a living, we have seen a lot this year. In the past 6 months, my wife Carrie and I have lived in Florida, California and now in Iowa. As we work and become a part of the community in Iowa, we are really overwhelmed by the sense of family and tradition in this beautiful land. The people are loving and welcoming and if this is a taste of the Midwest I really love it!

This time of year it is harvest. Time to reap the harvest of the seed that was planted months ago. It is when farmers and their hands diligently gather the crops of the season. As my co-workers and myself build and upgrade the power lines in the area, the community is jumping with excitement of what the hard work has produced on this land that God has provided them.

I got a chance to talk to a farmer while I was working. We were blocking a road that stood between the bean field and where the beans are processed. As the farmer looked me eye to eye, I sensed a tone of urgency that the harvest must go on regardless what I need to do. After talking with the gentleman, we racked up and moved to the side of the road and let the harvest continue. With a firm handshake and a smile the farmer was back to work.

As I reflected on what happened that day, one of my favorite bible verses came to mind. “He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”(Luke 10:2). Jesus says this as he is sending out 72 appointed followers. He uses this word, “harvest” to let them know of the urgency and limited time to accomplish this task at hand. Just like the farmer here in Iowa, the crops have to be harvested or it will be lost! Jesus also tells them that the workers are few and there is a lot of work to be done. That adds to the immediate response that needs to be taken. With many other instructions, Jesus sends them out to the harvest.

So the question is, what are you doing to help with the harvest? There are so many people in the world that need to hear the Good News and it won’t be easy. The next verse Jesus tells them ,”Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.” (Luke 10:3) He says it won’t be easy, but your efforts will be blessed! It has not been, but I can’t begin to tell you how blessed Carrie and I are to be “Farmers of the Father”. When we take the bible literally and “Go and make disciples..”(Matt 28:19) we do see the fruits of our labor. Through perseverance and the diligence like that of the Iowa farmer, you will too!

Until next time….

  1. What a wonderful post! Thank you for reminding us of the urgency to GO and reap the harvest! All for His glory!!!
