LOVE: THE FOUNDATION OF DISCIPLESHIP

I have a question for you, *If you had to pick one word to describe the Cross, what would it be? Grace, Mercy, Redemption. For me it would be Love. How could we possibly comprehend the depth of that love? The really wild part of it is once we submit to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior; He places that same love inside us! But that’s not it for this undeniable power of God. We are also commanded to share that same love with others in our faith family. Now why would that be so important to our Lord?
John 13:34-35 ““A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

People will know you are a disciple of Christ by that kind of love! It is the foundation of discipleship and the world will be attracted to it. Our world is severely malnourished and all they need is a taste of that sweet, life changing love that can only come from Jesus! Church, this is where we come in.

Do you think that how we treat each other attractive to the world? Do we love and care for each other like Jesus intended? I’ve been going to the same church for a while, if I didn’t show up for a couple of weeks, would anyone call? Do we minister to each other’s needs or do we wait on church leadership to do it? Do we meet during the week away from the church building to pray and encourage each other?

1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

One of my fondest memories of God’s people loving each other and letting their light shine to this dark world and it involve chicken wings and karaoke. Years ago when we attended Saturday night services we would invite folks over for wings and Christian karaoke after church. They would bring a side dish to share and willingness to fellowship and get ready to party! The awesome part wasn’t the food and singing, it was God’s children coming together and loving each other the way we were commanded to do. During our cherished time together, we made plans to meet during the week to study, pray and encourage each other. Folks that is my definition of a church that people are attracted to!

Sometimes it’s not comfortable making new relationships, but Jesus did not go to the cross for us to be comfortable, but to be courageous! I have been praying for a revival in our community, but we can’t do it as a lone soldier, we all need to stand together in this battle! It starts with loving each other. As we remember the love that hung on the cross, let’s also remember to love God and each other and show it to the world.

Until next time….
