The Defeated Disciple

This year I celebrate 30 years of marriage to the most beautiful person I’ve ever met. That’s right. God provided me with a special someone that loves me with all my shortcomings and puts up with all my flaws and still, helps me grow into a faithful disciple of Christ.

As I continue to grow as a disciple my passion to make disciples grows, but not without struggles. One of Satan’s favorite setbacks is for God’s people to feel defeated. When we are a defeated disciple, we are not going to carry out the mission and purpose that God created for us in Matthew 28:18-20. I speak from experience as I have allowed defeat to be my identity instead of Jesus at times during my Christian walk.

Now folks, you know exactly what I’m talking about! We go to church on Sunday to worship and get all fired up about telling someone about Jesus and the Good News just to be knocked down by negative comments and what others may think. We walk away feeling defeated and perhaps deny the very news that could change a life forever. We become another defeated disciple.

That is not why Jesus went to the cross. He did not go to the cross in order for us to accept defeat, but rather to defy it and stand victorious in the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior! I constantly have to remind myself that the battle has been won. (Point to the cross) Instead of dwelling on my circumstances I need to focus on growing the kingdom of God

Folks, I can be hardheaded and prideful when in the face of defeat. God made me to be a fighter and not to give up. Once I traded the life of being a comfortable, casual Christian for a radical, disciple making soldier in God’s kingdom, I got the enemies attention. That is when the evil one knew right where to attack me on unfamiliar ground, defeat. The advancement of evil forces was fast and hard and forced me to retreat to the original battle plan, Gods Word.

When I opened my bible, God reminded me that Satan is a liar. God used the letter of the Apostle Paul to Rome to reveal it to me….“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” Romans 8:1 . How encouraging it is to read the truth after believing all the lies. I have read this scripture at least a hundred times before, but now I am finally starting to understand that this battle has been won by the work on the cross!

I continued to study Romans 8 and it says in verse 11, “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” So not only has the battle been won, the same power that won it lives in me! Just so I don’t lose anyone here, the same power that raised Jesus from the grave is in us. Praise God, He is alive in me! That is exactly what Satan does not want you to know, because that truth will change the world.

I want to encourage you to read Romans chapter 8 in its entirety and let God’s power flourish within you and not believe the lie of defeat. I want to leave you with the last 2 verses of this encouraging chapter…“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Until next time……

  1. Amen. The word of God is like the Calvery coming over the hill whenever we are defeated and feeling lost.
